You can’t discuss iconic alternative rock bands without mentioning Smashing Pumpkins. Led by Billy Corgan, this contemporary band has been the epitome of alt-rock since it was formed in the late 1980s. Twenty-five years and nine successful albums later, Smashing Pumpkins continues to be one of the most respected and renowned bands in rock music today. Of course, winning awards helps make them recognizable. Smashing Pumpkins won the Favorite Alternative Artist award in 1997 and the band has also won two Grammy awards since its inception as well, including the Best Hard Rock Performance in 1997 for “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” and Best Hard Rock Performance in 1998 for “The End Is the Beginning Is the End.” You can find several Smashing Pumpkins t-shirts with your favorite album’s artwork on it as you “rock out” to your favorite Smashing Pumpkins song.

One of the turning points for Smashing Pumpkins was its Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness album. This two CD set was a favorite among critics and fans alike. It was released in 1995 and the following year, it won several MTV awards. The song “Tonight, Tonight” was nominated for eight awards by at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards and it won six of those nominations, including Video of the Year, Best Direction in a Video, Breakthrough Video, Best Cinematography in a Video and others. The song “1979” from the same album won Best Alternative Video the same year.
