Originally crafted as a manga, the Dragonball series was created by Akira Toriyama, who has also worked on the Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger video games. The green eyes, spiky blonde hair, and super powered martial arts of Goku and his Super Saiyan friends are what helped popularize anime among the little boys in the United States. Sure Dragon Ball Z�s ridiculously extended plot lines had lots of filler but its action was always entertaining. The whole story of Goku seems curiously similar to that of another benevolent, super powered alien baby sent to Earth to be its protector. Yes, there's an argument to be made that Goku is a Japanese version of Superman. However, there's no doubt that the series was also inspired by the ancient Chinese story Journey to the West. We may not have over 9000 DBZ shirts but the ones we have are pretty good.
