What is Dr. Seuss’s Real Name?

The real name of the well known author and illustrator of dozens of beloved children’s books was Theodor Seuss Geisel–his middle name being his mother’s maiden name.  The grandson of German immigrants, Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2nd, 1904. 

Famously known as Dr. Seuss, Theodor Geisel also wrote under a few other pen names as well such as Dr. Theophrastus Seuss, L. Pasteur, D.G. Rossetti ‘25, T. Seuss, Theo LeSieg, and Rosetta Stone.

How Many Books Did Dr. Seuss Write?

Writing and illustrating right up until his death, Dr. Seuss wrote 47 books, although several unreleased volumes have entered publication after his passing in 1991. His books have spawned 11 TV specials, 4 TV series, and even a Broadway musical.

What Was Dr. Seuss’s First Book?

No longer in publication, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street was the first Seuss book published.. It was published in 1937 by Vanguard Press.. Prior to publication, the manuscript had been rejected 27 times.  Its publication was equal parts chance and luck.  

After receiving rejections from various publishers, the book found a publisher after Seuss had run into an old college friend on a New York City street who just happened to work at the publisher.
